Vale is one of the world's leading diversified mining companies. Present in more than 38 countries, Vale is the world's largest producer of iron ore and pellets, key raw materials for the steel industry as well as nickel which is used to produce stainless steel, batteries, special alloys, chemicals and other products. Vale set up its Middle East office in Oman in December 2007 with an aim to expand its presence in key regional markets. The Company broke ground for the construction of its Industrial Complex in Sohar in March 2009 comprising of a pelletizing plant, bulk terminal and distribution center with a capacity of 40 million metric tons. In May 2010, the Company announced its strategic partnership with the Omani government through one of its investment arms by selling 30% equity in the pelletizing plant to Oman Oil Company. The US$ 1.36 billion project was inaugurated in March 2012 reaching its full production capacity of 9 million metric tones.
